A thick block cut from a whole loofah gourd, left in its natural pale colour. Dry, it is stiff and papery; under warm water it swells into a soft, springy sponge that lathers a bar of soap beautifully and polishes the skin. Hang it to dry and it will last for months, then go in the compost.
