A 9-inch rectangular plate painted under the glaze with a folk motif: a single blue fish, a red fish, a pair of fish nose to tail, or three small cats in a row. Sakana (魚) — the fish — is an old symbol of plenty on Japanese tableware. Use it for sushi, a grilled fillet, or a child’s dinner they will actually finish.
